| About the Site
|
A
short disclaimer before you immerse yourself
in our ranting and raving on the world of progressive
music:
Over
the past few years, we have been covering mainly
traditional progressive rock. Over this time,
we have discovered plenty of great bands outside,
but at times related to this typically conceived
genre. While the focus of the site has certainly
been on the vast progressive rock underground
of the 70s, we also aim to recognize "progressive"
rock as the inherently arbitrary term that it
is. As such, our intention is to keep our ears
and minds open to the huge array of bands and
artists that have in one way or another managed
to push the boundaries of their respective style.
If the coverage seems broad to you, bear with
us. Using "prog" as a starting point, we also
hope to bring you along as we explore a wide
variety of other experimental idioms, be they
psychedelic, metal, folk, post-rock, indie rock
and whatever else we might think relevant. We
hope that we can be at least somewhat informative
and entertaining in the process, and encourage
our readers to seek out new and different forms
of music they might not have previously encountered.
Enjoy.

July 4th:
Unfortunately in the past, the summer
usually means less updates to the site, and
that's no exception this year. Greg is abroad
boning up on his European prog knowledge and
I'm busy with ProgDay
organizing. Luckily Scott Hamrick has been
contributing new reviews, as well as the wealth
of Reels of Dreams Unrolled that have yet
to be archived will be going up. Please bear
with us during this downtime. - Mike Prete
December 15th: The first Reels of Dreams
Unrolled reviews have been posted! Keep an
eye on this
page as we continue to add more to the
site!

The
Madcap Laughs (1970)
The
mythology surrounding Syd Barrett is significant,
and really needs little elaboration here. The
prime mover behind Pink Floyd’s seminal debut,
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Barrett was
ousted from the band after his behavior became
too erratic. His legendary capacity for LSD
is well documented, and it would inevitably
lead him into a netherworld from which he would
never return.

Sid Smith:
Progweed:
Why do you think that EG wanted to keep so secretive
about his [Jamie Muir] departure and do you think
that the band held resentment to his departure
at the time?
Sid
Smith: Muir was incredibly important in the
band and connected Crimson to another musical
influence and direction. When he went, this
element was completely lost. Bill took up
some of the extra-curricular percussive but the
free-form aspect of Jamie's playing was gone.
Of course, the band evolved into the powerhouse
unit as result and you only have to hear tracks
like "Starless and Bible Black", "Asbury Park"
or "Providence" to know how special the band was
without Muir.
