Baltimore Progressive Rock Showcase Series
DFA/Thieves Kitchen
Italian symphonic progressive fusion band DFA's music is based on strong instrumental interplay. Critics have pointed out how amazing the quartet's chemistry is considering the amateur status of their members. It is no wonder though, with a rhythm section that has remained firmly in place for a whole decade through countless rehearsals, and the incredible amount of effort each instrumentalist has invested in the band. DFA's hard work is obvious in its accomplished compositions, which combine the telepathic interplay of fusion bands and the sophistication in melody and arrangements found in the best progressive rock. See http://digilander.iol.it/dfa/ for more information about DFA Born out of a desire to re-establish the UK as a bastion of truly progressive rock, Thieves' Kitchen were formed in 1999 and comprise former Mellow solo artist and main composer Phil Mercy on guitar, former Grey Lady Down drummer Mark Robotham, Andy Bonham on bass, Simon Boys on vocals and Wolfgang Kindl on keys. The band have recorded prolifically since their formation, with both 'Head' (2000) and 'Argot' (2001) receiving great critical acclaim. Musically the band have endeavoured to combine elements of power, melody and fusion in equal measure. Their lengthy compositions incorporate impossible time signatures, subtle jazz tinges and angst-ridden vocals. Comparisons have been drawn with National Health, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Hatfield and the North, and the band are keen to distance themselves from the neo school which has permeated the UK's prog scene over the last 20 years in favour of more extending and adventurous efforts.
